Arturo Sandoval

Arturo Sandoval is one of the most acclaimed musicians in contemporary jazz. Born just outside Havana, Sandoval has been and continues to be one of the most ardent champions of not only Latin jazz but the broader influence of Latin music on jazz. Maybe that’s what happens when your mentor is Dizzy Gillespie, a longtime explorer of Latin music. He’s a favorite of filmmakers looking to add a Latin tinge to a score or soundtrack. In fact, he’s the subject of a film, For Love or Country, which recounts his and his family’s defection from Cuba to the U.S. (Andy Garcia portrayed Sandoval, who wrote the score, which won an Emmy.)
