British singer-songwriter Rex Orange County (Alexander O’Connor) began playing guitar at 16 and soon was posting recordings to SoundCloud and Bandcamp. His distinctive blend of hip-hop, jazz and pop, showcased on his self-released Bcos U Will Never B Free album, caught the attention of musical misfit Tyler the Creator, who featured Rex on two tracks from Tyler’s 2017 Flower Boy album. That attracted the attention of major label RCA and resulted in three more albums, including 2022’s Who Cares?, which went to No. 1 in the U.K. Rex announced this month that a new album is on the way, and he’ll be touring the U.S. this year and on into 2025.
